One of the most important reasons intermediates aren’t advanced skiers is because their boots are over-sized. If they would only get refit in a pair of X Max 120’s, they could shed the shackles of mediocrity instantly.
This probably sounds like typical product puffery, but there are arguments to support this claim. A great fit begins in the heel and ankle area, where the X-Max’s narrow last ensures solid connection where it matters most. Everywhere else –toe box, instep, bunions on either side of the metatarsals, whatever, wherever – can be selectively expanded without losing the precision fit in the rearfoot. In the hands of the right bootfitter, it’s a game changer.
Getting a great fit is of marginal value if it isn’t accompanied by accurate steering, so every X Max model (130/120/100 flexes) is sculpted close to the critical steering column, and the Oversize Pivot transfers energy efficiently to the edge. The 130 offers a monoblock shell with a thinner race liner and claw strap. The 120 switches to a Velcro strap and a sliver of a walking sole but it’s still a sensational performance boot that, once molded to your feet, you can leave snugly buckled all day. The 100 fulfills the same function for the skier who’s a little lighter and/or shorter.
Except for a new cosmetic option in the 120, the X Max family is unchanged for 2017.
