When most ski companies modify an existing model, they make some effort to expand its audience by pulling a claw or two. Leave it to Stöckli to tweak the Laser SX so this already spirited ski is even less approachable by skiers of merely advanced ability.

The 2017 Laser SX incorporates Turtle Shell technology that stiffens the ski as it bends so it’s got more bite on edge. When the ski is flat, the Titanal sheet with the Turtle Shell wiggle down its middle returns to its relaxed position, so the ski flexes more easily in straight running.

Raw, unrefined power oozes from every pore in the Laser SX’s new topskin. This is a serious ski, ready to settle down and commit to a long-term relationship with every turn it meets. But when pressured, the Laser SX cuts cross-hill as if stung by a wasp, slinging its partner into the next turn with the suddenness of skydiving.

“A virtually perfect ski for any on-piste skiing,” avers Paul Jacobs from California Ski Company, “nimble yet rock solid. Surprisingly easy to ski at any speed. Beautifully balanced. Speed limit?” he impishly inquires before answering, “Don’t ask!”

If the Laser SX does have a speed limit, it lies outside the range of human endeavor. Somehow this speed addiction is channeled into short-radius turns that can cut a corner faster than a cat in a blender. (The cat lives, of course – this is a family-friendly ski site.)

Note the extensive size range available, indicating that Stöckli believes the Laser SX is suitable for women and children of all ages. Unless America receives a sudden infusion of athleticism (and disposable family income) this isn’t going to happen, but it does bode well for the skilled mademoiselle who know how to arc and spark ‘em.
