Whoever at Völkl came up with the model name “Deacon” deserves some recognition, like a better parking spot perhaps, for applying a moniker that matches the demeanor of the new series. The Deacon 76 moves with a serenity that comes from inner peace, one way to describe the calm that pervades every move the Deacon makes. All the Deacon models (there are four), use 3D.Glass, giving them a deep energy reserve that can be tapped by more aggressive skiing, and Titanal to amplify edge grip. Full sidewalls assure accurate communication with the edge. So the Deacon has all the power a smooth cruiser could ever need, but it doesn’t flaunt it.

Among the upgrades that distinguish the Deacons from the Frontside Code series they replace is a new UVO.3D damping device. In addition to operating in the horizontal plane, where the UVO’s movement muffles shock applied to an angled edge, UVO.3D is mounted on a piston so it can operate on the vertical plane, as well. Skiers who aren’t quite ready to commit to a laid-over carve may be more willing to take the plunge if they know the ever-composed Deacon will support them in their time of need. “On edge, this was my favorite ski in the category,” contributes Mike from Granite Chief.

The Deacons’ double-rockered baseline makes it a forgiving carver, and its relatively shallow sidecut likes to lope along in medium to long turns. It doesn’t impose its will on the pilot, but there’s no question it would prefer to lay down double tracks on firm corduroy. While its scores clearly identify it as a Power ski, most of that is due to its preoccupation with carving at the expense of such niceties as off-piste skiing. The Deacon 76 is arguably a Finesse ski, and the third highest Finesse score among Frontside Power skis supports that argument.

For its tireless grace and willingness to respond to pressure both great and small, we award the Deacon 76 a Silver Skier Selection.
