The Vantage X series debuts this season, finally retiring the Nomads to their tents. The improvements are many and manifest, making the Vantage X 83 CTi, lighter, stronger and more connected to the snow than the Crimson Ti on its best day. The single most significant new component is the Carbon Tank Mesh, a full-body weave of reinforcement that punches way above its weight class. Another new feature that intensifies edge grip without adding many ounces is Firewall, a square sidewall that’s extra-high underfoot, increasing torsional rigidity and energy transmission.

When Atomic introduced the Nomad series of carving skis what seems like an eternity ago, the collection’s flagship, the Crimson Ti, quickly established itself as a benchmark performer. Over the years, despite an extensive re-model effort, the bloom of first love faded. Atomic’s carving cadre lost its mojo.

The result is a resolute carver that needs a head of steam to come alive, but once it’s rolling, it showcases Atomic’s talent for building skis that love to live in the red zone on the speedometer.   “Once up to speed,” noted one of the Footloose crew, “it feels capable of anything.” While the X 83 CTi isn’t as fierce a fall line attacker as a Redster, it isn’t meant to be.

Jack Walzer, the leader of the Jans pack, was wowed by the Vantage X 83 CTi’s versatility. “Home run for Atomic,” he writes, “with superb Frontside ‘do everything’ attitude. Has all the characteristics of the Kästle MX84 but more user friendly overall – loved it!”
