How the 90EIGHT behaves depends on how you ski it. At low edge angles it wants to drift and needs some snow under its prow to keep it calm. This drift-ability comes in handy off-trail, but it makes for uninspiring handling on hard snow. To shift out of drift, inject some gravitational energy, tuck up your uphill leg and lay your skis as far over as you dare. In a flash, the wandering, unmotivated ski of a moment before is gone, replaced with an accurate carving device that’s fun to drive.
The 90EIGHT’s 3D.Ridge construction pares away excess ounces, and the absence of metal laminates keeps the weight down as well. In light snow the light weight is an advantage is it makes the ski easier to maneuver; however, in heavier, more uneven conditions its rockered and tapered tip is easily deflected. Stronger skiers who like to slay a crud field with speed will find their style better served by the metal-laden Mantra.
