Blizzard sent all their 2017 women’s freeride models to the fat farm to lose some core weight. Blizzard calls the transformative program Flip Core Women’s Specific Design (WSD). The weight loss is achieved by using a unidirectional, 3D carbon frame that runs the length of the ski. The carbon element is so light and strong it allows the new Black Pearl to dispense with its old Paulownia/bamboo core in favor of the stronger poplar/beech wood core.
While the 2017 Pearl is assuredly lighter and flexier, it’s essential character hasn’t changed. By nature an off-trail ski, it has enough torsional rigidity to cut crisply into hard snow. Its ability to instantly adapt to changes in terrain and snow conditions make the Black Pearl the perfect pick for the woman who is ready to try off-trail skiing but also expects to partake of an equal measure of groomers.
The Black Pearl has been exceptionally popular since its appearance; being a little lighter won’t tarnish its appeal. As Kelli Gleason of Boot Doctors pens, “New construction allows more timid skiers to enjoy this ski yet an aggressive lady will still be able to power it around.” Some of our crew felt a hard-charging expert might overwhelm the new Pearl, but the most powerful females always have the option of choosing an intrinsically burlier men’s model.
Its broad ability range and supple response to light reining earn the 2017 Blizzard Black Pearl a Silver Skier Selection.
