The Blackops collection developed over the span of several years, culminating this year in a fully fleshed-out field. The Escaper was made to play a dual role in the new family, serving as both All-Mountain East resort ski and a touring model. It’s tough to serve both masters, so the Escaper leans to the backcountry side of the equation, with a Paulownia core surrounded by lightweight Diago fiber. Its baseline is also biased towards off-trail travel, with low camber line underfoot leading to a slight tail rocker. The square tail shape makes for easier application of climbing skins. As a resort ski, the Escaper is best suited to those lighter or less powerful who prioritize ease and forgiveness. “A nice, comfortable ride,” concludes Jim Schaffner of Start Haus. “Not a category winner, however a solid, relaxed ski for the average skier.” Note that the size range skews short (down to a 156cm), so length can be adjusted according to the skier’s skill set.
