K2 is the only ski brand I can recall that has cocked up signature skis for rock groups in lieu of athletes. The Catamaran is an athlete-driven ski, but it’s the perfect vehicle for a Beach Boys ski as it all but begs to go on a surfin’ safari. Its signature feature, an asymmetric tip profile, is made to work in powder, where it keeps the uphill ski from getting frisky.
The Catamaran’s double-rockered, twin-tip design is made by and for athletes who prize creativity over convention. Drifting isn’t a demerit but a form of passive aggression, a way for the skier to hit the brakes, focus in and straight-line to a massive air. The Catamaran can sustain this sort of treatment because its aspen/fir core is bolstered by carbon stringers strong enough to support a skier dropping forty feet to a switch landing. The Catamaran’s surf-o-rama attitude now comes in a 177cm length, so lighter skiers can hit the surf. To enhance its appeal to skiers of all sizes, K2 trimmed the Catamaran’s MSRP by $50.
