Like all Kästles, the BMX 105 HP comes alive when it’s raked over, giving it all the motivation it needs to knock crud to the side and pummel wind drifts to pieces. Just because its baseline allows it swivel sideways doesn’t mean that’s how the BMX105 HP prefers to get the job done. In the clash of personalities, the carving character has the upper hand.

The Kästle BMX105 HP has a split personality. Its heavily rockered baseline and tapered tip and tail suggest a ski with more interest in surfing than carving. Its classic wood-and-Titanal construction wants to be tilted to a high edge angle and stomped on. Either personality can be summoned at a moment’s notice, which gives the BMX105 HP a big performance envelope.

For an expert skier, I hasten to add.

“This is a skier’s ski,” explains Bob Kuehn of Gravity Sports, “not for the faint of heart or those of lower skill level. The BMX 105 HP rewards those who ski well. As close as I’ve seen to a true “one-ski quiver,” he concludes.

I’m not of the persuasion that believes a Big Mountain ski is a great all-purpose tool, but then I don’t live at the base of Mt. Bachelor, where it seems to snow as often as it’s sunny in San Diego. If all you ever ski is powder and its aftermath, a ski with the capabilities of the BMX 105 HP makes a lot of sense. When the snow is soft, this ski is “easy yet powerful,” as Steph Humes of Jans pegs it, adding, “Carves surprisingly well for how wide they are.”
