If there were such a tome as The Book of Ski Design Proverbs, it might contain this nugget of ancient wisdom: “Without stability, there can be no ease.”
Fischer’s My Ranger 89 provides an appropriate illustration of this timeless adage’s veracity. This off-piste oriented arrow (note the slender tip dimension) earns the same marks for Finesse as the benchmark Black Pearl 88 and the New School Liberty Genesis 90, and it does so without surrendering the serenity at speed that only metal provides. That Fischer can slip Titanal around its lightweight Air Tec core and still keep a single ski’s weight at only 1620g @ 172cm is an indication of just how much material is removed in Fischer’s proprietary core milling process. The super-thin Carbon Nose inserted in the tip and tail reduces weight where it matters most.
Yet it isn’t lighter weight per se that our testers noticed, but the overall envelope of ease that accompanies its every move. “A ski you are comfortable on right away,” attests Janice from Squaw Valley, “A large sweet spot. Nimble and light. Go anywhere do anything ski,” she succinctly summaries in staccato sentences.
Janice’s fellow Squaw instructor Stacy filed this dispatch: “Conditions: hard pack. NYOOM. No wonder Fischer makes race skis – these things can go fast!! Super responsive; smooth turns at all speeds – carves like butter. Early, early rise helps out in the mixed crud, but definitely more fun on groomers.”
BTW, if you’re still wondering about the NYOOM bit, it’s an onomatopoetic meme describing blistering speed, as in the sound of a Formula One car – or life – passing you by. Point being, My Ranger 89 can handle the high rpm’s. While Stacy liked it better on groomers, the Ranger family is actually built to excel in the off-trail environment. Women who want a more distinctly on-trail carver in an all-mountain shape should check out the My Pro MT 86, reviewed with our Power Picks.
